Run Comes to an End

LLan travelled down to Newtown in Saturday hoping they could carry their un-beaten league run on into 2017. In an end to end first half both sides struggled to gain a foothold on the game. LLan threatened with powerful running from wing Ciron Davies and fullback James Claybrook but they couldn't quite breech the Newtown line. The pack were having a battle with the homeside in the set piece and second row Dan Davies who was starting his first game of the season was leading the way with some powerful running and great support play. The only scores in the half were two penalties for Newtown and LLan outside half Roger Chadwick converting a penalty for LLan to defeat the sides go in 6-3 at halftime. The second half saw the game open up and Newtown scored 2 quick tries following some good phase play and a penalty and stretched their lead to 18-3. LLan responded and following some great forward driving play and marshalling by Chadwick hooker Jack Wilson crashed over and LLan were getting back into the game, Chadwick added the conversion and brought LLan to 18-10. The next 10 mins saw both side going all out at each other and Newtown drew first blood matching up field and scoring. From the kick off LLan built pressure and fullback Claybrook slid through the Newtown backline and scored under the posts, Chadwick added another conversion and the game was now finely balanced at 23-17 with time running out the two sides were still locked in battle launching attack after attack on each other's line. LLan laid siege to the Newtown line and after phase upon phase scrum half Charlie Turner crossed the line wide out. Chadwick failed to give LLan the lead and LLan were close with the score 23-22. With time fast running out and both teams out on their feet, Newtown moved into the LLan 22 and their 10 managed to slip the LLan defence and cross under the posts. The conversion was the last play of the game and Newtown ran out 30-22 winners. Coach Mark Price spoke afterwards "wow what a game that was, our run had to come to an end but we went down fighting. We had a few players missing today but the lads that came in stepped up and were fantastic. It's always a battle when we play Newtown and today was no exception it was a battle from start to finish and unfortunately we didn't come out on top. We will re-group and get ready for next week's tough home game against Machynlleth".
